ARVO supports Stand Up for Science
Recent executive orders have had various negative impacts on science as a result of cutting federal funding, halting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, and more. In response, Stand Up for Science mobilized the scientific community and the public to protect science from political interference and censorship by hosting rallies nationwide on March 7, to defend science as “a public good and central pillar of social progress.” Events were held in more than 30 U.S. cities and several countries, including France.
ARVO staff joined over 2,000 participants for the Washington, D.C. rally at the Lincoln Memorial to show support for the protection of science. In attendance were many distinguished speakers, including former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Francis Collins, MD, PhD; Bill Nye; Senator Chris Van Hollen; Representative Jamie Raskin; Philip Plait, PhD and a cancer survivor who was the first recipient of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy.
