Dowling Society

The Dowling Society has been created to honor innovative vision researcher and first Chairman of the ARVO Foundation Board of Governors, John E. Dowling, PhD, FARVO. This distinguished donor society was established to recognize Dowling for his accomplishments within the ARVO Foundation, ARVO and the vision research community.

Dowling is best known for his analysis of synaptic circuitry of the retina and its functional organization for which he received the Friedenwald Award. He served as the first Chair of the Foundation Board from 2002 – 2007. Under his adept leadership, the Foundation’s initial five-year fundraising campaign goal of $3.5 million was reached in 2007, enabling the Foundation to continue supporting eye and vision researchers.

Carrying forth his spirit of innovative research, the Dowling Society exists to encourage enduring contributions to advance the mission of the ARVO Foundation by recognizing individuals for their significant support for eye and vision research. Members of the Dowling Society have made a pledge or donation to the Foundation for $10,000 or more. Members have the option of adding a spouse or significant other for an additional contribution of $5,000.

All members of the Dowling Society receive a commemorative medal and recognition at the ARVO Foundation and Dowling Society Gala Award Ceremony and Dinner. If you have made a donation to the ARVO Foundation in the past, you have already taken your first step towards becoming a Dowling Society member. Please contact the Foundation for more information.
